Our Family History: Confused?

Thank you for visiting my website. In an attempt to refrain from completely confusing you as wander through my family history maze, I'll try to explain how this website is set up. This site is comprised of three different sections: the Home Page, Family Tree and Genwiki. Please follow this link for important information about how to navigate through the site.

Home Page

The Home Page is where I post any new information that pertains to any of the families in my tree. I'll also post any interesting little stories I come across or anything I feel like talking about that day. There are several sections within the homepage:

Groups

I set up different groups that users can subscribe to. Whenever I post a message that is relative to members of that group they will receive an email informing them of the new post (if they have that option enabled in their settings).

Chatroom

This is a room where any users that are logged in can chat about anything they would like.

Guestbook

The guestbook is a place where users can post comments and suggestions about the website. Also, all registered users have their own guestbook, so you can post comments to other people as well.

Family Tree

The Family Tree is where all of the genealogical data is stored. To find an individual in the database you search by using the box to the right of the page. Here are a few of the menu items you might come across:

What's New

This page shows any individuals or families that have been added (or changed) within the past 30 days. This is where you can see if I've been active working on my genealogy or chasing my dog Brandy around the house and back yard!

Photos & Histories for Ancestors of Steve

I'm sure you are all eager to find out more about my ancestors! I know I am! Well... here's your chance.

Cemeteries

A listing of all the cemeteries in the database arranged by Country then State/Providence followed by County.

Headstones

A listing of all the headstones in the database arranged in alphabetical order. For a location based listing, use the Cemeteries link instead.

Places

A listing of all localities. This should be (and eventually will be) broken down by country then state/providence then county and so on. Unfortunately, I didn't do this from the beginning so I have a little work to do.

Dates and Anniversaries

Shows any births, deaths and marriages that occurred on this date in history. This is one of my favorite places to check on.

Reports

I found a zip file that I downloaded full of different reports that work with the tng software. I guess I should have read the line stating the reports weren't in English before I installed them. Here's another project for another day.

Access Log

This log shows recent users by login/ip address and the pages they visit. It's nice to see who's visiting the site. Most of the visitors are robots though.

Genwiki

Genwiki is the newest addition to the website. The page you are reading now is part of this wiki. The main purpose of this wiki is to give me the ability to add biographical information about the individuals in the family tree and give me the ability to link people that may not be directly related. For example, if several people in the family tree were members of a society, I could write about the society and link the individuals to that information.

Discussion Pages

You should see at least 4 tabs on the top of every page within Genwiki. The first tab shown above reads "help page." Other times this tab may be called "article" or list the title of the page. This would be the tab containing the information with proper formatting. The second tab is called, "discussion." These discussion pages are where I will put information regarding progress researching individuals or "To Do's" that I need to get around doing or any notes that wouldn't fit in the main article. The third tab shows the source code for the article. Which is basically how the article was typed without formatting. The fourth tab shows the history of the article. This shows every time a change or edit was made.
